Great i really didnt want to start picking up bad habits from Jeremy, the man is awesome but hes completely off the wall. Sometimes the tangents he goes off on are completely irrelevant.

Ok really nervous now, the test is under 18 hours from now and just finished work, so going to study now all my notes that i have, and try to somewhat relax. So if i can get some collective good thoughts from all those on 9tut, it would be much appreciated thanks people, and ill let you know how i got on afterwards.

@HELLO, I CAN GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE A LOT OF SUBNETTING QUESTIONS. GET A GOOD NITES REST AND WHAT I DID WAS JUST READ UP ON LAST MINUTE NOTES. DO NOT SPEND THE ENTIRE NITE STUDYING, IF BY NOW YOU DON’T KNOW IT THEN WHAT IS THE USE. TOMORROW MORNING JUST TOUCH UP AGAIN ON LAST MINUTE NOTES AND GET THERE 45 MINUTES EARLY. READ EACH QUESTION TWICE AND TOTALLY TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE ASKING. YOU WILL DO FINE. GOOD LUCK & LET US KNOW HOW YOU DID.

    @ Hello,

Know your key show commands: show cdp neighbor , show run, show ip interface brief , show interfaces, know how to secure a Cisco switch or router, weak passwords vs. strong passwords…., know how to setup RipV2, know how data flows through a network. Know the concept of proxy arp…routers don’f forward broadcasts by default,,, know how to setup port security…you should be good at subnetting…oh I believe that I have given you all the central keys to nail that exam! Yes, you’ll be fine, as well 🙂

  17. Hello

    @all
Thanks for you words of encouragement but, i guess i just wasn’t meant to take the test today as i arrived to check in with the instructor i was informed that there was some kind of logistical problem with the test software and myself and the other candidates could not be accommodated today, but i rescheduled for Friday morning now and hopefully things will go better then.

    Hi All,

I plan on sitting my CCENT exam i 2 weeks and I have come to a point where I don’t know what else I can do to prepare me for the exam. I have attended an official ICND 1 course, used CBT Nuggets with Jeremy, Packet Tracer to configure labs and tested my subnetting skills on subnettingquestions.com.

Is there anything else I should be focusing on?

  20. BIGD
    October 26th, 2011

@HOMERJ, CAN YOU GO THROUGH A SIMULATED EXAM AND SCORE AT LEAST 90%? HAVE YOU GONE THROUGH THIS SITE AND GONE OVER ALL THE Q&A, GONE OVER ALL THE DRAG/DROPS AND ALL THE SIMS AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT? IF NOT, THEN YOU ARE NOT READY. YOU SHOULD BE READY WHEN YOU CAN ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS AND FEEL CONFIDENT. A GOOD WAY TO TELL IF YOU ARE READY IS IF YOU CAN EXPLAIN ANY TOPIC IN DETAIL TO SOMEONE AND TEACH IT LIKE YOU ARE THE TEACHER. GOOD LUCK. I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE EXAM UNTILL YOU FEEL AT LEAST 90% CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE READY. $125.00 IS ALOT OF MONEY TO SPEND FOR NO REASON. MY .02 CENTS.

  25. True
    October 27th, 2011

Passed ICND1 today with a score of 974/1000. The exam was alot easier than I expected.

I prepared for this by studying CBTNuggets videos by Jeremy Ciaora [Amaaazing mentor], he really makes it so simple and easy. I basically treated those videos as if I was in a real lecture, writing all the video slides down along with every configuration command he does with notes next to each command [or set of commands] to explain their functions and any details Jeremy says that I think I might forget, I usually wrote an average of 2 pages of notes per video.

After finishing the videos and studying the notes I’ve written while remembering how all the concepts worked, I headed on to testkings, unfortunately I found that some small but important details have been missed out on the CBTnuggets videos. I’ve done the testkings submitted by Bean, some of Elmer Fud along with some of AttaullahShahid as well, I would say I did around 700 questions. 80% of the exam questions came from those testkings, I made sure to write down the explanation for questions concerning those missing details I talked about.

Here’s a list in case anybody is using those same videos for studying:

.store and forward switching [with variable frame size comes variable latency, but it allows for complete frame error checking.
    .password recovery
    .collaboration
.alternate command for default gateway on router instead of static route [ip default-network networkname]
.types of flow control [windowing, buffering, congestion avoidance]
    .difference between ICMP and TCP/UDP
    .arp -a on windows cli
.CSU/DSU and modems regarding their local loop termination [digital/analog]
    .debug commands
.frame relay point to point subinterfaces [I think this shouldnt be in ICND1 but I found that question on a testking]
.How split horizon works in RIPv2
.the IBSS topology on a wireless lan [laptop to laptop, no AP]
.different spectrums for different wireless lan protocols [Original 802.11 FHSS, .11b DSSS, .11a/g OFDM]
.Network attack by packet flood requesting TCP connection, fills destination target with nonsense TCP queues, filling it up –> Denial of Service
.Know everything about show version, show flash, and the useful information you can get from an IOS filename [capabilities, platform, compression and run location].

Make sure you understand everything regarding the list above. By the way, the test had the show configuration sim, implementation sim 1 and the security testlet. The security testlet was soo easy, but in 1 question the choices were a bit tricky, I had to solve it by focusing on eliminating the choices I was sure they were wrong, instead of finding the right ones. Try to relax as much as you can before the exam, I didnt study any books for this because to be honest, I didnt have to, Jeremy’s explanation makes everything stick in your head. Try to practice testkings as much as possible after you made sure you understood all concepts and memorized all configurations by heart, so you dont get mixed up by similar looking commands. Make sure you can reverse subnet in less than 15 seconds. I hope you find this useful, I know its a long post, but I definately owe it to 9tut.com. Good luck 🙂

Started playing with the 2801 Router today, haven’t worked on the real thing for years !
First thing, had to do a password recovery, that was fun
Then tried to telnet to the router, had loads of access-lists on it, had to remove those before I could connect
Then tried to copy the IOS to a tftp server, had some more fun

Beats the socks off working with simulators !

If you can afford a real cisco router, I strongly recommend you invest in 1 or 6 of them !

there’s a question on icnd1 about carrier sense multiple access/collision detection or CSMA/CD and Sending the jamming signal to prevent collision. 37. NeilG

  40. Anonymous
    November 12th, 2011

@ shan first of all when the collision is detected a jam signal is sent over the line and every device stops transmitting and then back off algorithm runs through which every device gets a random transmission time and in this way data is transmitted one by one.

everthing on 9tut has a chance of coming up on the exam, config of passwords for router and switch and on the con vty, config ip address, and config rip and how to access/config interfaces that will cover some 50-60% of what you need

From everything ive read the only nat configs that can up on the icnd1 is based in the sdm

    a) 113.10.4.0
    b) 186.54.3.0

    d) 26.35.2.255
    e)152.135.7.0
    f)17.35.36.0

I took the ICND1 test a month ago 850 score. I had gone to school and took the ICND1 & ICND2 one week coures. The instructor gave us the Cisco books, trainsignal videos, Cisco 640-802, 640-822, and 640-816 practice test PDF. I did not hear about this site until I started to study for the ICND2 test. The Cisco pratice tests do not go into the Sims and Hotspots like this site. I know the Sims here are going to help me on the ICND2 test that I plan to take after Thanksgiving.
The ICND1 test I took had the Implementation Sim on it.

    @phenom
oh boy… you really have to learn subnetting to pass this exam.

i’ll help you on this one

a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 (or /23) gives us networks like:
    10.0.0.0 ~ 10.0.1.255
    10.0.2.0 ~ 10.0.3.255
    or
    x.x.x.0 ~ x.x.1.255
    x.x.2.0 ~ x.x.3.255

we only care about the 3rd and 4th octets.

    ok, the options given now:
    a) 113.10.4.0
this is a subnet address, we can’t assign this to a device, false

    b) 186.54.3.0
this one is on the x.x.2.0 ~ x.x.3.255 network, it is perfectly valid, true

    c) 175.33.3.255
    broadcast address, false

    d) 26.35.2.255
valid address, same as option B

    e)152.135.7.0
valid address, same as options B and D

    f)17.35.36.0
invalid address, this is a subnet address, same as A, false

now… you read here and learn how to answer this kind of questions fast and without hesitation.

  57. Passed ICND1
    November 19th, 2011

Thank you 9tut! I passed using only CBT Nuggets (Jeremey Ciara is the best teacher I’ve ever had) and 9tut (amazing practice questions!).

    Tips:
Know which pairs are switched in a crossover cable: 1 and 3, 2 and 7
Know that a flood of requests for a TCP connection is a Denial of Service attack (Thanks “True” for posting that!)
    Know your subnetting
    Know your “show” commands!
    show ip interface brief
show interface s0/0, show interface f0/1, etc
    show running-config
Know that connection issues occur if a device and a switch are not set the same for half duplex or full duplex.

Is it safe to assume that all subnet questions assume you’re using subnet zero (and therefore, to calculate the # of subnets, you’d use the formula 2^n rather than 2^n-2?

Anyone know for certain whether SSH and HTTPS use both TCP and UDP, or just TCP? I’m finding conflicting information on the Internet, and right now, I can’t access http://www.iana.org to verify for sure.

    Thanks!

  66. hikerdude
    November 22nd, 2011

Finally got access to their website:

    http://www.iana.org/assignments/service-names-port-numbers/service-names-port-numbers.xml

As it turns out, all the main applications (ftp, ssh, telnet, smtp, dns, http/https) all can use either TCP or UDP. So, this begs the question, why do some of the exam sims ask which one uses both TCP and UDP when literally nearly ALL services uses both?

  67. hikerdude

Can someone explain what is meant by the term “lan segment”? From what I’ve read, it seems to mean the same thing as a collision domain. Is that correct?

It seems you could call the following configurations “lan segments” (from what I’ve read):

the connection between a host and a switch port

All devices connected to a bridge port (so if a bridge had two ports, you’d have two lan segments).

  71. hikerdude
    November 22nd, 2011

xallax, if that’s the case, why does the iana website indicate it they (ftp, telnet, etc), can use either transport protocol? That’s what has me puzzled.

ayo, you have to keep in mind that with packet tracer, you’re working with layer 2 switches. The term “layer 2” tells you it doesn’t know a thing about Layer 3 (which is where IP addresses exist). This is why you can’t configure an IP address on a port for a layer 2 switch.

Now, you CAN create a vlan and and assign an IP to it, because vlans represent a subnet, which implies layer 3 addressing.

If you were working on a Layer 3 switch (such as a Cisco 6506), you could configure an IP addres on a port on that type of switch (you’d just need to execute the command “no switchport” first to tell the switch you want that interface to be a layer 3 interface):

    @ayo
you can assign IP addresses to VLAN interfaces (which are logical interface)

In Packet tracer u get a 3560 Layer 3 switch aswell

That’s good to know NeilG. Guess I overlooked that icon.

ayo, if you use the 3560, just make sure you use the “no switchport” command before you try to configure an IP address on the interface. When you use the command “switchport”, the port becomes a layer 2 port. If you issue the command “no switchport”, the port is converted into a layer 3 interface (a routed port), which needs an IP address.

    A. The OSI application layer tracks the conversations and directs them to the correct browser.
    B. The ip source addresses of the packets will be used to direct the data to ther correct browser.
    C. The browser track the data by URL.
    D. The TCP port numbers are used to direct the data to the correct application window.

    AM I READY ???

    Dear Users,

Im planning to take the ICND1 end of december (most probably december 29th). I’ve used CCNA/CCENT ICND1 by Odom (read 2X), CBT nugget video by Jermey (watched 2X), some online forum and 2 latest dumps. When Im doin “test” on all dumps, most of time im scoring more than 85%. I can do any subnet/VLSM in 30 seconds. ahh one more thing, I’ve also ordered “31 days before CCENT”. so probably next 4 weeks i’ll keep myself busy (2/3 hrs per day) with dumps, online forum, 9tut, and packet tracer lab (1 exercise/day).

So what u guys Think ? am i ready ?

Are there any questions about NAT on the ICND1 exam? I know ICND2 calls for config of NAT. Not sure about ICND1

@Bruce, I’m sorry to hear that…but keep at it. What areas were you weak on?

I’m doing some practice questions, but only scoring 680/1000 🙁

    @montrose
nope, no NAT questions on icnd1

    @bruce
you should be glad you scored over 750/1000, that’s still high and is like a B you got in school.
still, cisco doesn’t like Bs, everybody must be an A-grade student.
just get yourself together and go over all the material again and again until you have no doubt you are prepared.

Can someone help with this please,

    1) CDP is being used throughout the network. What are the two reasons why the network administrator would use CDP? (choose two)

    A) To determine the status of network services on a remote device.
    B) To obtain the IP address of a connected device in order to telnet to the device.
    C) To verity the type of cable interconnecting two devices
    D) To verify Layer 2 connectivity between two deivices when Layer 3 fails.
    E) To obtain VLAN information from directly connected switches
    F) To determine the status of the routing protocols between directly connected routers.
    G) To support automatic network failover during outages.

    I chose A, B but the answer is A, D

  97. xallax
    November 29th, 2011

    @phenom
    A) we use SNMP for that or just telnet to it. you see if it is a switch, router or host, but that’s says next to nothing about network services.
    B) this could be true as you get the IP address of that device with “show cdp nei det”
    C) “show controller” does that
    D) yes, CDP can verify if there is a L2 connection between directly connected devices as it operates at the data-link layer
    E) that’s done through VTP
    F) “show ip route” or “show ip protocol”… not “show cdp” for sure
    G) a secondary power supply is used for that or just an UPS

    i chose B and D.

  98. montrose
    November 29th, 2011

The answer to the CDP question is B and D. Remember, CDP operates at layer 2, and it also provides the IP address of a directly connected CISCO device (show cdp nei detail).

Hi guys Can someone help me with this pls,

An elementary school has a computer in every classroom. One entire wing of the school connects to a centrally located hub. The teachers have reported a slowdown in the past few weeks to the network administrator. The network administrator has analysed the network and documented a steep increase in utilization as the teachers use a new network-based classroom management application. Which solution will improve the performance the most?

    A. Replace the hub with a switch.
    B. Install a repeater in the affected wing.
    C. Reboot the router that connects to the hub.
    D. Install a router and install another hub in the affected wing.
    E. Ensure all devices in the affected wing have a default gateway
