Passed ICND 1 today with 925/1000,

Subnetting is the key to pass, got questions from 9tut LabSim and Cisco prepking by Quenm 518q.

The security testlet was also there.

How a already configured client with SSID connects to AP whose Wireless SSID broadcast disabled.

    WPA over WEP.

    Wireless protocols a,b,g,n,w and 802.11b vs 802.11a.

Maximum subnets bits which can borrowed in class B network(8,10,14 or 16) and from which class IP 16 subnet bits can be borrowed(A,B,C,D or E).

Is the answer 14 and Class A?

  9. Jeff
    August 2nd, 2011

Hey Xallax, for question 1, it was class b right? So shouldn’t it be

    172.16.0.0 – 172.16.127.255
    172.16.128.0 – 172.16.255.255

so the valid subnet for 172.16.112.1/25 should be 172.16.0.0, right?

  10. Jeff
    August 2nd, 2011

I think I’d like to correct myself. I should have looked at the subnet mask instead of the IP address.. 172.16.112.0 is correct.

if you want to pass (almost) any cert exam go spend an extra $100 at pass4sure to get all questions and answers (i was enrolled in a course that allowed me to use the program for free)

i passed the icnd1 test with 987/1000 after going through pass4sure’s test questions twice.

  18. xallax
    August 9th, 2011

no, they don’t, but you should know that a VLAN is a broadcast domain and that you need a layer 3 device to route traffic from a VLAN to another.

I passed my Icnd 1 exam today. my thanks and appreciation to all u guys who helped me out to cross this huddles. once again a big thanks to this site… cisco exam is subnetting for u to pass Cisco exam, IP subnetting is the most important concepts one should grasp. regards to Xallax and ehmy u guys are great…….

  27. superman
    August 11th, 2011

Using the TAB Key worked. I took the exam today and was very confident. Just stumbled across this site not to long ago. I only used this site after I have read through the matterials and understood subnetting. Scored 775/1000 Needed an 804 which no one at the testing center knew what I needed until I took the test.

Had a Drag and Drop Question for DHCP about the DHCPACK, DHCPOFFER, DHCPREQUEST, DHCPDISCOVER. I messed it up. But someone said on here Use the Acronym DORA to remember. http://books.google.com/books?id=SzoEAAAAMBAJ&pg=RA1-PA69&lpg=RA1-PA69&dq=dhcp+drag+and+drop&source=bl&ots=p2JXKpLnGv&sig=edagzu-nLmcjFDC2wkfYrPNGyDg&hl=en&ei=VSRDToaeOsvTgQfIt83QCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CEIQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=dhcp%20drag%20and%20drop&f=false

Go figure, called the testing center and they said I can come earlier if I wanted to since it was only me so I get there 30mins early only to wait around for 45 mins because the admin computer had some gfx driver issues and once they fixed it they got me rolling 15min after my scheduled time… laaame

  28. xallax
    August 11th, 2011

    @superman:
    DORA: discover, offer, request, accept
    BUBU: broadcast, unicast, broadcast, unicast

DHCPdiscover messages are broadcasts (sent from the PC to the subnet broadcast address or to 255.255.255.255)
DHCPoffer messages are unicasts (sent by the dhcp server to the pc. MAC addresses are used)
DHCPrequest messages are broadcasts (the PC doestnt have an IP yet, has to send the message as a broadcast)
DHCPaccept messages are unicasts (the server gets back to the PC and leases it an IP)

Passed 875/1000. Would have done better but I was nervous. My first questions was DHCP Dora drag and drop. The security testlet was on there, the show sim, and the show cdp neighbors sim.

Study the resume command, and how to exit out of telnet. If you were going to set up a 300 host subnet how would you do it? It has to be cheap, and a dedicated collision domain for each host, and separate broadcast domain from the rest of the network.

Get a good simulator. I used dumps by Quenm 518q.vce, and saq 374q.vce from http://www.examcollection.com

Thanks, 9tut it helped a lot.

I don’t even have a clue about telnet, in that I am just self-studying at home. Any tips? I do practice on PT for sims and command familiarization.

  35. xallax
    August 13th, 2011

telnet is… here’s an analogyfor you

it’s something like logging in to your favourite computer game.
you open your game client (start –> run –> “cmd” –> “telnet 192.168.0.1”)
you input your user and password (you type in the VTY password that was set by the administrator on the router)
you see welcome screen in the game (the welcome banner is displayed)
you play the game (you view the router settings or alter its configuration)

telnet is a geeky way to configure a device from far away.
you can simulate telnet in packettracer

inter vlan also not included ?

  38. xallax
    August 13th, 2011

    @karachi
i’ll say it once again: “you should know that a VLAN is a broadcast domain and that you need a layer 3 device to route traffic from a VLAN to another.”

My advice is to go through the ICND2 videos by Jeremy Cioara once. It would help you get familiar with some concepts that may be thrown at you on the exam that have to do with the ICND2 curricula (VLAN and inter-VLAN included).

ICND1 is about subnetting and you should be able to tell a subnet address, broadcast address, IP class for any given IP, figure out the required subnet mask for a number given hosts and so on.

  39. Jeff
    August 13th, 2011

Hey Xallax, how do I go about using telnet in packettracer? I do know telnet is a method of accessing your device remotely. I am just concerned that it will be somehow part of ICND1, a sim perhaps.

  40. xallax
    August 13th, 2011

    @Jeff

    Configuration:

    Add 1 switch
    Add 1 PC

    configure the Switch:
    enable
    configure terminal
    interface vlan1
    no shutdown
    ip address 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0
    line vty 0 4
    password 1
    login
    do write

    Configure the PC:
    go to *Desktop* tab
    select *Command Prompt*
ipconfig 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0 (enter to send)

    1. simulate console connection:
look at the design in packet tracer (where you see your added devices)
click ctrl+alt+o, select the console cable (light-blue)
click on the computer, select RS 232 as port
click on the switch, select console
click on computer, go to *Desktop*
click *Terminal*, you will get the default values (remember those, 9600/8/N/1/N), click Ok
you can see what’s going on on the switch console

    2. simulate vty connection (telnet)
    On the PC:
    close the *Terminal* window
    click on *Command Prompt*
type: telnet 192.168.0.2 (this is why we had to configure IPs on both devices and enabled the administrative VLAN on the switch – VLAN1 by default)
you will be prompted for the password, type in “1” (it’s the password we set up under *line vty 0 4″ – configured 5 telnet/ssh lines in one move, from 0 to 4)
you can see what’s going on on the switch once again.

difference between those 2: if *terminal monitor* is not enabled you won’t see debug and error messages.

hope it’s not too much info at once, good luck practicing 🙂

  46. xallax
    August 14th, 2011

just tried it out myself, no, it seems there isnt.
    tell you what…

    enabe
    configure terminal
    no ip domain-lookup
    do write
    !

that should fix the biggest problem: the command line getting stuck for 60 seconds after a mistype

  47. xallax

    Dear All,

Which is better option , to write ICND1 and ICND2 exams or composite CCNA(640-802) exam? I am finding it very tough to pass the CCNA simulator exams.

  53. xallax
    August 15th, 2011

    ICND1+ICND2 PRO:
    more time
    about the same price
    less topics to focus on
you get the title of CCENT after passing ICND1

    ICND1+ICND2 CON:
you have to go to the exam center twice
if you have an area where you aren’t prepared well it will show up on the score paper more obvious than if you took the CCNA

  54. xallax
    August 15th, 2011

CCNA exam (640-802) is ideal for people that want to renew their certification validity

  55. Bryan
    August 15th, 2011

Passed ICND1 with an 825 today. BEWARE: My test was completely different from the dumps and drag and drops that are on here. I had 0 drag and drops on my test. STUDY SUBNETTING! I have years of networking experience and I think this test was insanely hard. The material is not hard, but the way the questions are worded will make you pull your hair out.

  56. BIGD
    August 15th, 2011

I find that hard to believe that your test had NO drag & drops? Almost 99.99999% of the people that I talk to and almost everyone on this site and others say their exam had drag & drops, test lets and sims & your’s didn’t. Very unusual.

  57. BIGD
    August 15th, 2011

@Xallax, am I wrong? Have you ever come across an exam that didn’t have any drag & drops?

  58. xallax
    August 15th, 2011

does it matter? they are question types, all of them.
i had a few drag&drops on the exam back in march, they were easy.
drag&drops are about knowing the concept and using a bit of logic (mostly by process of elimination when you’re unsure)

  59. BIGD
    August 15th, 2011

Correct, but I never heard of an exam that didn’t have at least 1 drag/drop.

gratz bryan for passing even though you had no drag&drops.

I know it’s weird isn’t it? A co-worker of mine said he had 4 drag and drops on his test. So I was really surprised when I didn’t have any. I guess it was just the luck of the draw for me.

  62. Bryan
    August 16th, 2011

Oh and my original post was kind of confusing. I had 0 drag and drops but I had the show sim and security sim. I am pretty sure the security sim isn’t counted though.

  65. xallax
    August 16th, 2011
  66. fever102#
    August 17th, 2011

I took/passed (937) ICND1. There are some tricky questions (one I swear didn’t offer the correct answer) but I’d say 80+% was touched on (many word for word the same) either on this website or in the .vce/dumps I reviewed:
    > Cisco.TestKing.640-822.v2011-04-18.by.AttaullahShahid.513q – v. useful explanations!!!
    > Cisco.ActualTest.640-822.v2011-05-26.by.saq.374q)

Implementation Sim, Show Config Sim, Security Testlet, ARP Testlet (Q2), Operations (Q2,5), Subnetting (Q1), Drop-n-Drag (Q1,3) … these appeared on the test.

ICND1 was my first IT certification test and first visit to the test center. Everything was new. I was scared; heart thumping nervous. The proctor queued test, left and I had time to jot notes (subnetting matrix) as I went thru the pre-test review (which shows you how to interact with the Cisco test interface)… then the questions started… It was just like the .vce’s. Five questions into the test and I was relaxed and finished with 27 minutes to spare.

I worried a lot over this test and probably pushed myself (too?) hard to study (1 month relaxed book review—T Lammle’s CCNA Study Guide—and 1 week cramming 9tut and question dumps). I only discovered 9tut and .vce’s in the last two weeks (VERY thankful for this resource (I’ll donate); makes me more confident about plan to proceed on to CCNA, and CCNASecurity and Microsoft). In the end it was not the hardest test that I’ve had to take… do the work, relax and it’s yours. Good luck.

  67. BIGD
    August 17th, 2011

@ Fever, thanks so much for this info, makes one more sure and relaxed to know. Good luck on your future exams.

  68. Jeff
    August 17th, 2011

Will you know the results immediately after taking the test?

  69. fever102#
    August 17th, 2011

@Jeff, you score will appear on screen after you click “End Exam”. The test center, which should have checked ID (I used DL with photo and signature, and credit card with signature as proof) and taken your photo before you begin, will on completion give you a “Prelim Exam Score Report” with like 4 different Cisco generated ID’s for this and that… and your grade at the bottom.

  70. fever102#
    August 17th, 2011

One other thing about the exam simulations… I had heard/expected to need a login (“cisco”, “Cisco”, etc.) to begin simulations but I did NOT encounter this. No login required to begin the simulations. It may be different on ICND2.

If you hit [Enter] and nothing happens mouse-click in the simulation window and try again, use either/both the main keyboard and the 10-key button. I had a little scare when the simulation would not respond but it seems one just needs to click to select the active screen when you want to key-in… duuuhh.

  71. xallax
    August 17th, 2011

    @fever102#
i pressed space or enter when i was there and it told me that it would skip to next question and that my simulation wasnt done, it was just as the sim showed up… my heart just stopped… you have to be careful, there’s no rewind there

I’m busy studying for my ICND1 exam
Worked on Cisco for many years (Never got certified), and then left the IT field completely
Anyways, now 7 years later I’m ready for it again, and by the end of next year I will have my CCNP

Have to say I’m enjoying IT (cisco) again like I did all those years ago, those days we didnt have GNS3 and Cisco Packet Tracer to practice with !

I’m about halfway through writing a tutorial on subnetting, but dont want to waste time on it if I have nowhere to post it,
any idea where I can post it when done, and is there people that actually want it ?

Through experimenting, research and good old practice I have reverse engineering down to about 1 minute and hosts and networks at 2 minutes, and thats what I try to explain in my tutorial

It should be about 10 pages

@neilg omg! 2 minutes? 1 minute? no. this must be done in a few seconds, 20 max for the icnd1/icnd2/ccna exams

tell you what: finish your tutorial, upload it on mediafire.com and post the link here whenever you see someone having difficulties subnetting

20 seconds, would love to see that !

So reverse engineer 52.248.221.187/27 and give me the
    Network Address
    Broadcast Address
    Subnet Mask
All this in 20 seconds, when I see it I will believe it

Thats how u see if 2 addresses are in the same range or not

I Will go look for that Video !

  85. Jeff
    August 19th, 2011

I agree that it should be around 20 seconds..

    52.248.221.160
    52.248.221.191
    255.255.255.224

    @neilg
    /27 = 8+8+8+3, 32-27=5, 2^5=32, increment 32
    x.x.x.160 network
    x.x.x.192 broadcast
    255.255.255.224 subnet
    calculated in 10 seconds.

    @heal
yes, they will give you a plastic covered paper and a watermark

Passed ICDN1 950/1000 8/18/2011. Study consisted of one year of school Valencia, (tut.com thank you would never have passed without your help. at least not the first try. Many sims, simlets, and drag and drops. 80% of questions from dumps. Great job on this site ICDN2 in 9 days.

I understand how u get to the answer, thats not a problem at all
    Its the speed bru LOL

It takes me about 30sec to write the answer out , u calc and write FASTER than I write

I made up a small chart for me to save time
It contains my bits , subnet values and 2^ table so I dont have to sit and count, cause that also wastes time

I use the method taught by Jeremy from CBT Nuggets with shortcuts to save time

  91. xallax
    August 20th, 2011

please don’t use that method, it’s hard and messes you up. everything else mister Cioara teaches is A+++, but subnet calculation is not…

ok, i’ll share this once again (wrote this a few months here somewhere)

    ip example: 12.13.14.15/22
you count the bits in blocks of 8:
    22 = 8+8+6
    a block of 8 means 255
for the last block i memorized this:
    0-0, 1-128, 2-192, 3-224, 4-240, 5-248, 6-252, 7-254
what are those numbers? they are my way of representing:
    0000 0000 – 0
    1000 0000 – 128
1100 0000 – 192 and so on, that sucks… and you must look at the chart and count and… forget it, better recall 8 pairs and do that
    0-0, 1-128, 2-192, 3-224, 4-240, 5-248, 6-252, 7-254

ok, i look at that, 6 is 252, i have my subnet mask now
    255.255.252.0
    increment is (testout method)

    255.255.256.0 –
    255.255.252.0
    ____________
    000.000.004.0

long story short: 256-the value of the bit that is incomplete (256-252=4)
4 is the increment. i start counting in blocks of 4, i get
    x.x.0.0
    x.x.4.0
    x.x.8.0
    x.x.12.0 <– my subnetwork
    x.x.16.0 <– i subtract 1 and i get the broadcast address, x.x.15.255

so the network id is 12.13.12.0
    broadcast: 12.13.15.255

what's with x.x… ? well, i don't care about those numbers, they just repeat so i just write X where the bit is full.

    *********

    this same example, 2nd try:
    12.13.14.15/22
    8+8+6+0
    subnet mask: 255.255.252.0
    subnet id: 12.13.12.0
    broadcast: 12.13.15.255

wrote this in a few seconds, didn't count 🙂

    ok, now you try with…
    155.12.78.2/27
    98.22.33.8/9
    120.28.9.177/19
    223.223.223.224/26

at first i was using todd lammle’s method… i was getting good at it.
then i took a look at jeremy cioara’s method (he stated that there are N methods of doing this), it looks slow and geeky… and you have to write all those 1s and 0s and you can get dizzy and you could mark the wrong bit and and and…
then found testout. it’s the best method to find the increment.
so i mixed up todd lammle’s and testout’s methods and i ended up with what you can see up there.

through simple logic you can figure out the summary address and the wildcard masks too (those aren’t icnd1 related)

there is a subnet question generating script that comes with any of my VCEs (always a new question, shows answer after completion, displays the time it took you to type in the subnet id, subnet mask, broadcast ip).
once you get familiar with it (5, maximum 10 minutes) you will realize that it’s taking you longer to type in than it does figuring out the answer 🙂 practice makes perfect.

I reverse engineer basically the same way as u
You do 256-x for your increment
I do 2^ for mine with a shortcut, if 3 bits I know its 32 and so on
(Say subnet is /27 then 3 network and 5 host bits with 32 inc) – kinda memorized

How do you do when u get a range and have told x hosts or x networks
Say 195.30.30.0/24 need say 50 hosts
Do u have a “speedy” method for that ?

    Btw, tx for the help

    it’s blocks once again. 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, and so on
they ask for 233 hosts, 233128-2, 127<256-2, the subnet will end with .0
they ask for 50 hosts, 50<64-2, 64=2^6, that leaves 2 bits for subnetting, 2-192, the subnet will end with .192

  95. xallax
    August 20th, 2011

9tut’s text formatting messed it up…
    233 less than 256-2
    then it was
    127 bigger than 128-2, less than 256-2…

Passed ICND1 today with 962…..Actually easier than I thought it would be, finished with 35 minutes left on the clock. If you know your material in and out there should be no problem.

    Studied with:
    Odom ICND1 Book
    Todd Lamle CCNA book

Ok, had a go at it this morning

At first didnt understand, but got it now, did 3 to see how it works, its short and quick

    Only did hosts

Taking the kids to the beach now, when I come back I’ll do a few based on networks

Tx, definately alot quicker with much less writing

    Hey everybody,
I have two silly questions about the exam and hoping someone could clarify, have been studying for the last 2 months and am hoping to sit the exam at the end of September. i already know the exam is a mix of sims and mcq but could someone tell me if i do a sim and get 75% of it right do i get 75ish % of the marks or is it completely wrong, or is there some latitude and the same goes for a mcq question that has 3 correct ans and i only get 2 right.
